The Dermal Replacement Layer is made of a 3-dimensional porous matrix of cross-linked collagen and glycosaminoglycan.

The Temporary Epidermal Substitute Layer is made of silicone and functions to control fluid loss and serve as a bacterial barrier.

Bi-Layer Membrane System

Matrix Properties

Porus matrix of fibers of cross-linked Collagen/Glycosaminoglycan (GAG)

  • Pore volume fraction of 98%
  • Molecular weight between cross-links
    of 12,000+/-5,000 dalton
  • Average pore diameter of 30 to
    120 um
  • Collagen/GAG ratio of 92/8 (type 1
     bovine tendon collagen/chondroiton
     6-sulfate)
  • Specified resistance to degradation
     by collagenase
  • In vivo degradation rate, T=30 days

Histology

Histology demonstrated an intact dermis is achieved with no scar formation in any of the biopsies of the patients examined (Stern et al, 1990).

  • 336 serial biopsies
  • 131 patients
  • 7 days to 2 years after application
  • Six sequential phases of repair
    were discerned
  • An intact dermis was achieved
    with regrowth of apparently normal
    reticular and papillary dermis
  • No scar formation appeared at
any time during the course of
healing in any of the biopsies
    of the patients examined
